I'll check in again this weekend with a full report after finishing (and after finishing a few Guinnesses)...thanks again for reading and we'll talk again soon.

The Dog Days of Winter...

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; Ok, say by now you've cursed the weatherman, cursed your neighbor for taking the parking spot you dug out, the local government for lack of snow removal skills, and if you're like me, even cursed God for making it all happen. Anyways, the end is in sight, and despite the horrible conditions the past few weeks, I've still managed to get in my half marathon training, in creative ways nonetheless. Today was actually pretty nice out, about 45, sunny and most streets just wet. I got in a nice 45 minute tempo run, but lately it's been tough to get in a decent outdoor run. I absolutely hate the treadmill, so I have to be very creative. I've got a membership to the YMCA, which is very valuable this time of year. On days I haven't been able to run outside, I've gotten in great conditioning workouts at the gym. Usually, I warm up with a nice 15 minutes on the bike or the elliptical trainer, then full stretching and core training with the weighted exercise balls. Throw in 3 sets each of 25 push-ups, pull-ups and dips. I top it all off with a 30-40 minute swim. I alternate laps with different strokes swimming and also strapping on a floatation belt and do some laps of pool running. It provides the body with just as much aerobic benefit & exhaustion as a run when it's just too crappy outside. It also just feels great. My body gets probably the best night's sleep after a pool workout.
As for you, if you're already an established runner or are actively training for a goal race, great for you. If not, but you wish to and you're finding it tough to get motivated this time of year, don't get down about it. It's not that hard to start a training program. A logical first step would be to get some good shoes that fit your feet, body type and running goals. I always tell folks to go out and see Mike Monagle at Delaware Running Company in Greenville Shopping Center and they will set you up nice. Sure you can go to Dick's or Sports Authority if you want know what you're looking for or want to find a deal, but nobody there is going know anything about finding the right shoe for you. The Running Company is staffed by runners who know how help other runners find the right gear for them.
The next step is getting out the door (or on the treadmill if that is your preference) but the only way to become a better runner is to start logging miles. Start small, not too far, not too fast, say a few miles or 25-30 minutes at a comfortable talking pace. Walking is ok too...maybe alternate 1 minute walking breaks for every 2 minutes running and then gradually work your way up adding another minute running. If you have a dog, it's also a great excuse to get him or her out. If not, think about adopting one-check out the DE Humane Shelter or Faithful Friends to get started on that. The goal when you go out is to enjoy yourself. It doesn't have to suck or be painful.
Once you start running, it's a safe routine to go every other day...say 3-4 times each week, gradually building up mileage or time. I go with time, just because I don't always have the time or patience to measure out the distance of every run. It's a good routine to add 10% each week...so if you ran 4 days in the week, totaling about 20 miles, just add 2 more miles to the next week's total. Or add 3-4 minutes to your average run each week if you're not keeping track of distance. Now once you're into a nice routine and comfortable adding distance or time on a regular basis, you can add in weekly long run if you like. It should be 30-40% of your weekly running total, so if you're logging 21 miles for the week, have your long run be 7-8 miles. If you'd like to map out a distance and don't have the means to measure it, a great tool to use is Google Maps. Go to the main page, click "My Maps", then "Browse Directory" and then "Distance Measurement Tool"...it's very accurate and very simple to use.
A great way to keep track of your progress is to keep a diary or a running log. Write down everything...where you ran, how long, what you saw, what you ate before and after, any pain or problems and how it made you feel (hopefully great). You'll be surprised at how much you can learn from yourself.
Enough for now...I'm off to bed and to pray for rain to do some more melting the next few days. Hopefully later this week the streets will be easier to navigate. Spring is 4 weeks away...until then, the pool better be ready for me.

Six more motherscratching weeks...

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; So the most famous giant rodent in the Western Hemisphere gave us his word on winter on Tuesday and honestly, SCREW YOU PUNXSUTAWNEY PHIL. Anyways, we shouldn't be surprised since it has been a harsher than normal season so far and all the predictions were that we were going to really get it this year.
I was lucky enough to get out for a long run today on the Woodlawn Trustees Trail, given that with the forecast for the weekend, it probably won't be great running conditions for the next few days. I for one don't mind running in the winter, or in the snow and ice for that matter (I just can't stand treadmills). I have a few great pairs of trail shoes that grip the elements well. I favor Asics, particularly the Gel Trail Attack 5, below Both are rugged and bulky enough like a hiker, but light and well cushioned enough like a runner with the classic Asics feel. They are also water resistant, which comes in handy this time of year. I would recommend them to anyone looking for a great winter training shoe, especially if you've worn Asics before. The Trail Attacks felt great today even after running for an hour through muddy snow covered trails...my feet were totally dry. I also wore a pair of Nike long compression socks, which not help alleviate pain from shin splints, but also add a little warmth if you're like me and won't touch a pair of tights, no matter how cold it is. They're actually made for soccer, but function very well anytime running for extended periods. They keep my feet nice, warm and dry and have never given me blisters. Until spring, they are the go to sock.
This week not only marks the 6 week countdown until spring (hopefully), but also the 6 week countdown until the Caesar Rodney Half Marathon. I am just over 2 weeks into my training and am up to about 20 miles a week. My hope is to add a mile to my long run each week (I did 6 miles today) and top out at about 35 miles a week before the race. To make it interesting, I'm also doing fundraising for the race's sponsor and benefactor, the American Lung Association of Delaware. If you would like to make a donation to help fight lung disease in my name, you may do so here at my homepage. It's totally tax deductible, would help me reach my goal and would go to a great cause. So if you donate, thank you very much and if not, shame on you, you should. So enjoy the winter wonderland this weekend and until next time, good night and good running.

Balls of Fury...

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; Alright, so you're a decent runner, and you want to maybe step it up a little bit. Or maybe you just want to feel stronger and more confident while out there or just in your daily travels.
Weight Training...I know, it sounds so heavy...imposing...time consuming...or you just like to run and don't want to get too big. All excuses, at least for the workout that I do to supplement my running routine. I actually don't use weights, at least not heavy ones. I go to the gym, but everything I do there I could do at home, so I think my $50 a month YMCA membership will be coming to a close come spring. The elements to keep in mind here are low weight, medium reps and high quality.
I like to use weighted medicine balls, found at most gyms and available at any sporting goods store. I found 2 great ones, 8 & 10 pounds each at the Sports Authority on sale for less than $30 each, so don't say you can't find any. Now I am in half marathon training, so I am serious about my training. I currently am running every other day...Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. I do my weight training and conditioning Monday and Wednesday. I either swim, bike or do an easy jog on Fridays and I rest on Sunday. My Mon./Wed. routine starts with a 15-20 minute cardio to get my heart rate up, then some light stretching and yoga moves to get nice and limber. I then proceed to go through a mix of different moves standing up, sitting down and on my back with both the 8 and 10 pound balls.
Here is a great regimen to follow, this one followed by Tyler Hansbrough and the UNC Tarheels basketball team...I think it must've done some good, given that it helped them win a little something called the National Championship last spring.
Since I started using the balls as opposed to free weights and barbells, I feel stronger, more flexible and have much more energy not just on my runs but throughout my day. It also takes a lot less time, and you can do it in your living room. You'll have more time, more energy and like me, maybe some more money saved from that Y membership. Until next time, good night & good running.

On the Trails in Delaware....

The Trail runs parallel with beautiful and serene Brandywine Creek

Probably my favorite trail run in the area (and probably my favorite run overall) is the one shared by Brandwine Creek State Park and Woodlawn Trustees Wildlife Preserve in North Wilmington. One of the trailheads is only about 5 minutes down the road from me, so it's very convenient and close. There are a few different trail heads you could start from but my favorite is to park at the Jewish Community Center on Garden of Eden Rd., just off Concord Pike Rt. 202 in Talleyville. The trail is well marked at the end of the road next to the lot, and you have a few directions to choose from after getting started. You can go left, which is a bit more narrow and technical, which goes south towards Mount Lebanon Rd, you could go straight, which goes downhill, a bit rocky and leads right to the Brandywine River and the Brandywine Creek State Park trail that heads north towards the DE/PA line. If you did that, you could do a nice out and back to Smith's Bridge just over the PA line for a nice 5 miler. But I like to go right just after getting on the trail and stay about a half mile before going left and down towards the creek. I cross a smaller creek and then head back uphill towards Woodlawn Rd...you'll know you're in the right place when the trees clear and you see a horse farm and a road where you have to turn left. You'll go straight until you hit Thompson's Bridge Rd., which I then cross, go past a small gravel parking lot and continue through a small cluster of trees and stay right at the fork and continue downhill, crossing Ramsey Rd. and keep following the trail past another horse farm. One warning about being on these trails is that they are frequently used for horseback riding and mountain biking as well, so it would probably be wise to leave the headphones at home. I've also crossed paths with many a deer and foxes, so be on the lookout for wildlife of all shapes and sizes.

Share the trail with horses and mountain bikers

It may all look like private property, but as long as you stay on the marked trail (you'll see signs saying "Wildlife Preserve" and it will usually be roped or fenced off from the private property) I usually keep going north across Beaver Valley Rd. where the trail perimeters cornfields and crosses a few more creeks, going behind the Hi-Point Dairy. There are some great lookout spots on the high parts of the trail before heading down towards the Creek. Eventually I make my way down to the Brandywine where I turn south and head back along the creekside trail. After crossing back over Thompson's Bridge Rd., go about a half mile and just past a small pedestrian bridge, you'll see a trail on the left which will take you back up towards the JCC parking lot. The run in full is just over 8 miles, which may seem like a bit much. You could definitely shorten and/or vary it up by staying on the upper trails or staying down on the creekside trail like I described. Find whatever suits you, but I'm sure you will savor and enjoy it given the beautiful natural surroundings.

Smith's Bridge-One of just 6 Covered bridges in Northern DE

Here are some fully marked trail maps to help you along...
Accurate measured route map of the run I described
Brandywine Creek State Park Map
Woodlawn Trustees Trail Map
If you're not familiar with the area, I would keep the map handy, a phone and/or gps or compass and start short to get your bearings. Once you go a few times, you'll find it easier to navigate.

Alongside Ramsey's farm with the Granogue water tower in the distance

You'll see on the map there are several other parking areas with access to the Woodlawn Trails. One of the larger lots is is at Ramsey Road. Take I95 Exit 8 onto US-202/Concord Pk. toward W Chester/Wilmington. Go 5 miles. Turn left at Beaver Valley Rd. (The big intersection before Brandywine Town Center) Go .3 miles. Turn left at Ramsey Rd and go 0.4 miles. Then turn right to stay on Ramsey Rd. The parking lot will be .8 miles on the right. A gravel road across the street from the parking lot leads to several trails. There is also a trailhead at the back of that parking lot.
This truly is a diamond in the rough of the narrow cramped roads and private property taking up most of the space in the area, so it is a rarity. I would love for others to enjoy the natural beauty of the trails as much as I do. Feel free to drop me a line with any questions or advice...then get out the door and go! Good night and good running.

Great Moments in Running #785 "The Big Race"...

Now we all know that Seinfeld was brilliant, but this is sheer & One of the many things I want to accomplish with this blog is to spotlight a different part of Delaware in regards to running routes. It's a small state with not much space on the road for recreational use, so I'm gong to try and show you the safest, most scenic and efficient routes while not risking getting hit by a DART bus. I also like to wear headphones, so I tend to stay far from busy streets and traffic. Today I'm going to talk about the Brandywine Park & Rockford Park area since it's in the city, a mix of shade and sunny areas, with nice wide sidewalks and paths away from the street with plenty of great stuff to see along the way. If you're lucky enough to in or near this area (I grew up right near the zoo, so this was where I first started logging miles) you can access it easily and are already aware of the beauty and charm and pedestrian friendly aspects.
As for me, my usual routine would usually consist of a nice 5-10 warm-up coming through the neighborhood down towards 18th & Broom St., near the athletic fields. I enter the park near the playground between the baseball fields, make my way down towards the river, and go left towards the zoo and begin what I called the Figure 8 loop. I would run east down Park Dr. to Market St., cross the bridge & run up the other side of the river past Wilmington Hospital to Van Buren St. bridge & then cross to the other side and continue west towards the Swinging bridge (the footbridge). If you're lucky like me, then maybe you'll catch a glimpse of the local wildlife in the form of the Great Blue Herons that nest along the river.

I would then follow the path up the hill, underneath the traffic bridges towards Wawaset St., then continuing past the large beautiful homes of Kentmere Parkway. After passing the Delaware Art Museum and then entering Rockford Park at Riverview Ave. and Red Oak Rd., I would pass the dog park and head into the woods towards Rockford Tower. I would stay on the road until reaching the Tower, where since it has a bathroom, water fountain and plenty of grass to rest on, when I would take a breather to regain my strength and bust in to the homestretch. The great part about this run is that it is a nice gentle and rolling terrain with a gradual uphill leading into Rockford. After you go around the Tower and go back out the way you came, it's a nice gradual downhill that helps to push you towards the finish. Also if you're lucky enough to be in the park on a day in the warm months when the Tower is open, it is free and definitely worth it to head up the 100 or so steps and see one of the best views in the city. It is still a working water tower for the surrounding neighborhoods so it makes sense that it was built on the highest point in the city.

After turning around and heading back the way I came, I finish up with a nice staraightaway along the Brandywine just underneath the I-95 bridge and ending at the bottom of Monkey Hill.
Altogether, the run is about 5.5 miles, but if you'd like to shorten it, you can just do the river loop for about 2.5 miles or you can lengthen it by heading out he back entrance to the park towards Pennsylvania Ave. and turn northwest past Tower Hill. This route follows the same course as the Caesar Rodney Half Marathon, so it would be an ideal training route if you're planning on doing the race. Here is a link to a map of the Park.
Feel free to comment or drop me a line with any thoughts or favorite runs of yours in the area. Next time I'm going to talk about my favorite off road trail, the Woodlawn Trustees Preserve in North Wilmington.
Until then, goodnight and good running.

The New Year of hope and dreams...

Ah, the New Year...new hopes, new dreams, new goals, new races to scare me & challenge me...
Winter has sucked so far for me running wise. I strained my lower back in November and due to sometimes crippling pain in my lower back and hip, I couldn't run for 5 weeks. Thank goodness for the pool, muscle relaxers and red wine...lots of red wine. But now, I'm recovered and pain free, so back to it. Right? Not as easy as I thought...
Starting small, after a month long layoff due to the holiday paunch and the nasty battle with sciatica in my lower back, I knocked out a very hard 35 minutes on Sunday, then a more challenging 45 minutes on the trail today. It was hard to take into consideration that I put on almost 15 pounds since the fall. My quads felt like they had been beaten slowly by midget boxers...definitely thank goodness for Physical Therapy. I'm going to the wonderful people up at Elite PT in North Wilmington. They've trained the Men's US Soccer Team, tennis star Maria Sharapova and USA Baseball amongst others. Thorough, courteous, professional and comfortable, just what PT should be.

<a href="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3630/3431422243_555ffc34ec.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; As of now my training will consist of 4 days of running, 2 days of conditioning and cross training and one day of rest and recovery. 2 runs will be tempo runs, between 40 and 60 minutes at a fast, controlled pace concentrating on form, posture and breathing. 1 run will be repeats, usually on grass, sometimes with hills, totalling about 45 minutes or 4-5 miles. And the last run, the best one...the long run. Done on the weekend, I'll start with 50-60 minutes this weekend and add 5 minutes each week, topping out at about an hour and 45 minutes (my goal finish time is under 1:35)...I'll be updating on my progress as much as possible...that's all for now, some hot chocolate with Bailey's is calling me before bed. Good night, Good running.

New Year, New Hopes, New Dreams...

I've returned from the dead...I know it's been over six months since I've last posted, but honestly I just had life take over for a bit. Blogging is great, but it is very time consuming for someone like me (who works for a living) so I'll do my best to get back to it, given that I owe that much to any one who drops in on me, by accident or not. Today will be short, just a few of my favorite pictures from the past year, and a recommendation to check out another recent discovery, The Daily Coyote. Life is far too short to be spent sitting at a computer, so without further ado...

Top 10 things to do this summer instead of blogging (including reading others' blogs)

10) Go to the beach and relax
9) Go somewhere you've never been before (may I suggest San Francisco or Seattle, where I've already ventured to this year & plan on going back soon)

8) If you don't already, sign up for some sort of social club or gathering such as a
book club, bridge club, running club, dog park, etc...

7) The next time you are thinking of sitting and surfing the web for an undetermined amount
of time, turn on some good music, get in a comfy chair with a beverage of choice (for me right now it's Magic Hat #9) and actually listen to the music...

6) Grab a good book & go to the park & spend a few good hours feeding your mind...I just picked up Michael Chabon's new book & I plan on getting at least a hundred pages read after work tomorrow
5) Go see some live music...outside if possible, with plenty of good food & beverages...go to your favorite radio station's website (here in Philly it's 88.5 WXPN) and check out the calendar
4) If you don't already have one, get a bike and try riding to work if close enough, and other close destinations that you would normally waste gas on

3) Go to your your nearest baseball field or stadium and take in the sights and sounds of America's past time (Go Phils)

2) If you don't already have one, go down to your nearest animal shelter and give a pooch a home...I mean you can get a cat but come on, dogs rule & we all know cats are evil & then you a have reason to take a walk or run at least twice a day, so like me, you'll never have to diet
1) Take one day and call out of work...turn off your phone, don't check your email and just

relax, maybe do one or some of the above but more importantly, enjoy the moment simply for

what it is...and believe it or not, it's actually a lot of fun even if you're by yourself...

Ok, so you may or may not agree with all this, but that's just to give you an idea of how I'm feeling these days...I just don't feel feel any need to blog. Maybe it's just a fall/winter hibernation type activity for me. I may or may not continue at some point in the future, but in the meantime, you can catch me at the beach, the park, various music festivals (check out WXPN's fest in July if possible), up at the ballpark, on my bike, out for a run with the dog, etc...you get the picture. So until next time, have a safe and wonderful summer.

PS-Also, if you can somehow persuade yourself to sign up for some volunteer or charity work, do it...you'll be amazed at how much you enjoy it.

I left my heart in San Francisco (but I'll be back soon)

Hello everyone, happy April to all...it's been awhile but I have a very good reason...exploring. While the Northeast was thawing out from winter's last gasp, I took the opportunity to make a very overdue and long awaited virgin pilgrimage to the Golden Gate of the West...San Francisco. What a town, by far the most unique place I believe to have visited in this vast country of ours. From wonderful meals (Sushi Sushi!) to exhilarating rides up Powell St. on the Trolley to a bikeride across that big red bridge (yeah that one), the weather was perfect & the trip was far too short...cannot wait to go back. Here are some pictoral highlights...

Here is the most recognizable piece of the skyline, the Transamerica Pyramid, stretching with it's wings 48 stories high...

And also the Palace of Fine Arts, the only building left from the 1915 World Exposition...

The very majestic and beautiful Grace Cathedral, by far the largest and grandest place of worship in the city (gotta love a church with a gift shop)

And then there's Lombard St. aka the crookedest street, but given that the hill has a 27 percent incline, it definitely makes the ride a little easier...

And now we have the world famous residents of Pier 39, the sea lions, who seem to know when their picture is being taken...

Now you see why it's the most photographed bridge in the world...

Do me a favor, if you haven't been to this wonderful jewel of a city, go now. Who? Ok, I know not many people knew the guy by name or even face, but God forbid if you didn't recognize the voice about 5 seconds into a song. "Peace of Mind", "Long Time", "Amanda" and of course "More than a Feeling" were some of Boston's greatest hits, and Delp was the voice behind them. I don't admit this much, but I was a huge Boston fan growing up. Along with Journey, Meat Loaf, Styx and Night Ranger, this was the stuff that I sang in the shower, while I was listening to Nirvana, the Pixies and Pearl Jam with all my friends. It was even more sad to hear that Brad took his own life at the all too young age of 55, it just makes you think, and it made me want to go out do something, anything creative to enjoy this life for all that it's worth.

I'd just like to take this time to talk to people who don't take know much about or take clinical depression seriously, or think that a person should or could just "snap out of it." Clinical depression is as much of a biological disease as heart disease or stroke, but instead of killing by blocking an artery, it kills by creating so much pain that a bullet or a bunch of pills actually looks like a better option that standing it another day. Suicide is the eighth leading cause of death in the US for men, killing 40% more people every year than Alzheimer's disease. The big difference, of course, is that when someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer's nobody thinks it's a put on for attention, or that if they'd just get their act together they wouldn't have the disease to begin with.
If you think that you or a friend might have clinical depression, don't screw around or waste any time, that's the most serious symptom you're likely to get -- that wondering is the equivalent of chest pains in heart disease. Respect it and talk to a doctor, or get your friend to a doctor. If it's a friend, people are most likely to do something about it if all the barriers to not acting are taken away, so call around yourself, get the names of some professionals and present their names and numbers to your friend on a piece of paper, making sure to include a suicide hotline number, or just your number or anyone else's who's willing to be there and listen. Ask them to keep it with them in their wallet or purse. Then follow up and, in a polite and friendly manner, nag the hell out of them until they do something.

Here is a good resource to start...

There even may be a few of you reading this who wonder if you might be depressed, and maybe some who even feel a little envious of what Brad did. If that's you, please understand that this is not a normal way to think, your thoughts and your life can be different, and it's worth it to give it one small chance by going to see your doctor or a therapist, or just talking about it to anyone. You can quit at any time if you don't like it, but if it does feel like too much to bear, just give some outside help a chance to improve things for you or someone close to you.

Here is a very cool and unique tribute from a young fan to Brad and Boston, and there's many others on the youtube page...I especially like this one because it shows the very wide and infectious power of the music, no matter how old you are...Rock on and RIP Brad, I do sincerely hope that you have finally found your peace of mind.

Springsteen and Jesse Malin was like peas and carrots...

Hey there fellow seekers of creation and curiosity, I am especially overjoyed today to report that there is some new Bruce Springsteen out there. My affinity for the Boss equals that of a beloved family member, so I just can never get enough, even if it's just a guest duet spot on "Broken Radio", a great song on Jesse Malin's new disc Glitter in the Gutter. If you're not familiar with Jesse, it's about time you did...he fronted the 90's punk outfit D Generation, but has released three stellar solo albums since 2002, each better than the last. Malin's good friend Ryan Adams produced his debut The Fine Art of Self Destruction , and guests on the new record as well. Jesse holds musical similiarities with Springsteen in being able to balance driving rock anthems with sensitive piano ballads, but definitely carves out his own identity with his unique and insightful songwriting. Here's the collaboration between the two, sure to be a classic, but hey don't take my word for it. Do yourself a favor, go out and pick up Jesse's music, and maybe use this as an excuse to rediscover some old Springsteen. As for me, I just went back and listened to The River for the first time in awhile, and man does it hold up. I didn't do a write in vote for Bruce in 2004 for nothing...

Any Pearl Jam is better than no Pearl Jam...

Hey everybody, I know not everyone are Pearl Jam fans, but myself and most others in the civilized world that I know happen to be. So it is with great joy to officially have some new PJ...if you've seen the preview for the new Adam Sandler flick Reign Over Me then you have heard it. A rousing and faithful cover of the Who's classic tune is the centerpiece and namesake of the film, and it happens to be on the Pearl Jam fanclub's official holiday single just mailed out. The song, along with a great live version of Neil Young's rebellion anthem "Rocking in the Free World", is a worthy addition to the already hugely wonderful PJ catalog. Here are the songs, along with a link to the fansites below, if you want to shell out the 20 bucks and "officially" become a Pearl Jam follower. Another thing, you can be the judge, but I think Roger Daltrey is probably thinking right now he should've recorded Eddie's scream to take along to play on last year's reunion tour...it's pretty impressive.

www.pearljam.com

www.tenclub.com

Don't play bass for Lucinda Williams (unless you want a dark & timeless song written about you)...

Lucinda Williams seems depressed...or pissed off...or moody...or anything but happy whenever she writes songs. Over the course of a 25 plus year career and 9 albums, including this months' West, we've been treated to a close up of her various bass players, her heart and it's states of brokenness and how she feels about it all. Some critics have been harsh about her recurring and seemingly monotonous themes and moody sounds and production, but I for one, am always impressed by an artist such as she. If someone has actually been through the stuff in her songs, I would say they'd consider themselves lucky to be able to turn it into such creativity (and not throw themselves off a bridge in the process), and plus, she is a damn fine singer and performer. I saw her live a few years back and she played for four and a half hours...So if you don't mind some darkness in your musical taste, along with breathtaking honesty, damn good guitar playing and top notch songwriting, check it out. Here's her site, plus a link to a live show that was on NPR from last year, and one of the more upbeat & sweet songs, I'm guessing an ode to her sweet Mama...

www.lucindawilliams.com

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4767023

http://rapidshare.com/files/18798553/02-lucinda_williams-mama_you_sweet.mp3.html

Some nice new sounds...

M. But an artist as creative as he is can still be fresh and new

even on other peoples songs, as he does on his new ep, To Go

Home, out this week. The title track is an old Daniel Johnston tune, and also check out the rollicking version of Jimmie Dale Gilmore's "Headed for a Fall". Definitely hope for the future, in music that is. And why not? They were Bob Dylan's original backing band, they had 4 different singers and songwriters(try that kind of multitasking) and they had Martin freaking Scorcese make a movie about them breaking up, the now classic concert/documentary The Last Waltz...and now they are truly legendary as ever. It's sad that we'll never be treated to hearing them play live again, given that Richard Manuel and Rick Danko, two of the most unique voices and talented players, are no longer with us. But we do take solace in knowing that the surviving members and their offspring still make great music today (See Ollabelle) and that one hell of a tribute album has finally been released. Endless Highway-the music of the Band was released a few weeks ago and collects a nice mix of young and old, known and unknown, faithful and reinvented in interpreting this wonderful influential music that needs to be heard. Here are just a few of my faves, classics done by the likes of My Morning Jacket, Jack Johnson & Death Cab for Cutie, in that order...Enjoy.

http://rapidshare.com/files/16248056/03_My_Morning_Jacket__It_Makes_No_Difference.mp3

http://rapidshare.com/files/16248309/04_Jack_Johnson_-_I_Shall_Be_Released.mp3

http://rapidshare.com/files/16248434/14_Death_Cab_For_Cutie_-_Rocking_Chair.mp3

Ollabelle loves Delaware...

I am going to get back to regular posting soon enough, and I thought a proper occasion to do so would be to spread the word about my current musical obsession...Ollabelle. They're based in NYC, and have been around a few years now, having put out their second studio album, Riverside Battle Songs, last summer. They tour relentlessly, and last night made their third trip back to Delaware, playing the historic and cozy Gild Hall up in the village of Arden. It was the second time I had seen them, and they definitely don't disappoint. Whether you're a fan of Americana, folk, rock or just all around amazing musicianship, you should check them out. Altogether an amazing show, mixing originals and various covers, including "Jesus on the Mainline", "John the Revelator" and a rousing version of "Ain't no more Cane" the Dylan/Band classic first played on the Basement tapes sessions by Olabelle member Amy Helm's dad, Levon Helm, the legendary drummer for The Band. With that, they were christened as a new Skynerd or Molly Hatchet. Luckily, they didn't didn't go down from there. Instead, they have extended out in so many different directions, on 2003's Decoration Day and 2004's The Dirty South. With their new A Blessing and a Curse, out this Tuesday, they continue their exploration of not just the underbelly of southern life, but of any life that has had it's share of more hard luck than good fortune. And the southern rock tag has been pushed to the side more than ever. Opener "Feb. 14" sounds like a lost Replacements track while "Aftermath USA " shows their Stonesy side. The three guitar and singer-songwriting assault of Patterson Hood, Mike Cooley & Jason Isbell (whose "Daylight" is my personal fave) share duties perfectly, balancing straightforward balls out rock with heartwrenching slow burners. They are one of, if not the most consistent and hard working American rock bands out there so do yourself a favor, go out and get this album, but if you don't trust me, you can stream it here first...
www.blessingandacurse.com/mediaplayer/
www.drivebytruckers.com

In my eyes, Josh Ritter can do no wrong. His first two discs, The Golden Age of Radio and the masterpiece Hello Starling established him as an heir apparent to the Leonard Cohen/Jeff Buckley/James Taylor school of singer songwriting. But he has truly bucked any comparisons to anyone who has come before him and carved out his own place very definitively with the new album The Animal Years. He wears his heart and his politics on his sleeve and it shows right away. Opener "Girl in the War" literally brought tears to my eyes the first time I heard it, while the 10 minute closer "Thin Blue Flame" will make you think about everything in the world and in your own life that is right and wrong. There's something to be said about a singer songwriter who stirs that much emotion with his words and music. I've seen him live and he is one of those performers that knows how to wrap the audience around his finger...catch him at World Cafe Live in Philly on April 27th...check it out.
You can also stream his album here...but trust me, you'll want it before you're done.
www.flashenhanced.com/joshritter
www.joshritter.com

Nice old timey sounds from not so old voices...

It seems like yesterday I was putting together a top 10 list of best cds for 2005 and already I believe I have one for '06 and we are only in March. As I'm still enjoying stellar releases from veterans such as Rosanne Cash, Beth Orton, Jenny Lewis and Willie Nile, a few new discs this week keep up the quality of great new sounds so far this year...

When someone says blue eyed soul, who comes to mind? Van Morrison maybe, for the more classic minded...or remember the Commitments, for the more obscure...Rick Astley if you're just cheesy and pathetic (come on, you know you belt out "Never Gonna Give You Up" with the windows up in the car by yourself)...but how about James Hunter? Who?
Maybe when you first hear his voice, you swear it's some lost Sam Cooke or Otis Redding song. But no, this fortysomething English born singer and guitarist has been cutting his musical chops almost two decades, first backing up Van Morrison in his band in the early 90's and then cutting a few albums himself. But his new disc People Gonna Talk is a breakthrough, chock full of a timeless sound that harkens back to classic 50's and 60's R&B soul. It's funny that it's not that the "retro" thing is coming back, to him it's never gone away. Each track sounds so fresh and live, it sounds as if he's brought a party right into the room. He says, "It's simple really--it's music you can groove to." Trust me, I had it on at a party last weekend and it really takes a lot for people to dance, but this sure did it. www.jameshuntermusic.com

Onto more mellow sounds, Neko Case is a voice you will also remember when you first hear it.
She gets compared to 60's crooners like Patsy Cline and Dusty Springfield, but I definitely think she has a unique quality all her own. Like her indie rock contemporary Jenny Lewis, Neko likes to spread herself over many different projects and sounds at once. But in this case, it's the songs themselves, for she writes and sings like she means it. On her new solo album Fox Confessor Brings The Flood, she's been through the ringer, and makes you know it. The songs are sad in words, as has been many of hers over four solo albums, but she also seems to benefit from her alter ego as a member of the indie rock band New Pornographers. She's kind of their Stevie Nicks in that when she stands to the side, she seems happier, just to be along for the ride. But when she is front and center, you can feel your heart break with hers. But the songs' timeless qualities make them go down so much easier. She also plays with a virtual all star assembly of talent, including Garth Hudson of the Band, Calexico and the Sadies, creating so many layers and textures of atmosphere, you can see the pictures her songs paint for us. Tracks like "Star Witness", "That Teenage Feeling" and "Hold On, Hold On" are just a few of the gems on this near masterpiece of Americana. Definitely worth the attention...aren't those redheads always? www.nekocase.com

So here is a so far best of list of '06...

Rosanne Cash-Black Cadillac
Beth Orton-Comfort of Strangers
Cat Power-The Greatest
Willie Nile-Streets of New York
James Hunter-People Gonna Talk
Neko Case-Fox Confessor Brings the Flood
Jenny Lewis-Rabbit Fur Coat
Rhett Miller-The Believer (we'll talk about next time)
The Little Willies-self-titled (also next time around)

Also, still can't get enough of the Clap Your Hands Say Yeah record and also Wilmington's own Spinto Band...check 'em out if you can.

If only SNL did all Digital Shorts with white raps...

<img style="DISPLAY: block; This weekend, the world mourns the loss of two legends of Hollywood. Darren Mcgavin, with a career spanning 60 years, died at the age of 83. He starred in numerous movies and TV shows but will forever be remembered each and every Christmas on TBS as "the Old man" who loved his lamp more than anything...I'll never say "Sons of bitches...Papa says!" again without thinking of him.

"Anyone up for last call at the Regal Beagle...I hear it's swinger's night!"

Don Knotts, portrayer of two of the most lovable fools in TV history, Barney Fife and Ralph Furley, also past away at the age 81. Who knew Three's Company could survive without the Ropers? Shame on them for thinking they could have a successful spin-off...but great for us b/c we were treated to some of the best lines and silk scarves ever used on television...they'll truly be missed.

Dylan...Springsteen...Willie Nile...Who?

Dylanesque...the next Springsteen...who says these things? Those terms should have been banned from the English language long ago b/c it's not only unfair to those two legends, it's more unfair to be compared to them and have to live up to that media created status when you are just starting out. Willie Nile is one of those guys, that just never has gotten the respect or recognition of some of his contemporaries. When he broke onto the music scene in the early 80's, he got the inevitable kiss of death, being tagged those comparisons. His debut and three more albums sustained him over the course of over 20 years or so, but now after a six year absence, he returns with his finest yet. Streets of New York (www.2minutes59.com) is not just a love letter to his lifelong surroundings, but to everyone and everything that makes the center of the world just that, from his unique and poetic point of view. His weary but exhilarant voice and poignant lyrics paint so many pictures of the place him and so many others have called home. You can tell he's been around the block a few times on tracks like "Back Home" and the title track, but he turns back his own clock to get rocking on "Game of Fools" and wear the heart of a young punk on his cover of the Clash's "Police on our Back". Willie and his fine new album go hand in hand with the unofficial capital of the world, much like the Boss to New Jersey, who invited Willie onstage with him & the E Street band at the Shea stadium shows to close their 2004 World Tour. Little Steven Van Zandt even says, "He's so good...so good, I can't believe he's not from Jersey...", and we all know, what Silvio says, goes. Or else.

This week's rotation of what to see and hear...

I've had a problem with the new Jenny Lewis album...I just can't seem to get it out of my cd changer, or her out of my head for that matter. A very cool little low key indie flick about an art dealer (Alessandro Nivola from "Laurel Canyon") who decides to bring his new artsy English wife back home to small town North Carolina to meet his quirky dysfunctional family. Ben Mckenzie (from "The OC") perfectly plays his angry redneck brother who seems to resent anyone and everything, except his sheltered pregnant wife, pricelessly played by Amy Adams. The whole cast shines, especially Adams, who deservedly got an Oscar nomination (and in my mind, should win)...and for all you indie music snobs, Yo La Tengo composed the beautiful score for the soundtrack...

Now something a little more obscure but just as much fun...with all the hubub over the SNL "Lazy Sunday" video, I did a little research on the "new guy" Andy Samberg...

He and his two writer friends Jorma and Akiva (who help him write much of his stuff on SNL) had a pilot for FOX a few years back that never got picked up called "Awesometown"...that and a bunch of other great little bits of comedic genius are on their website, "the Lonely Island"...oh and if you can, watch THEIR cut of the pilot, not FOX's...unedited, that is, and probably why FOX didn't air it...and hey, they figured the OC would maybe face some stiff competition from "The 'Bu"...www.thelonelyisland.com

Sorry Johnny, you'll have to wait until 2010...

Hey everybody...sorry about the lack of posts this week...some personal issues to take care of, and frankly, the astonishing drama that is the figure skating of the Winter games has kept from doing much else. Yes, Janet Jones, star of such 80's classics as "The Beastmaster", "American Anthem" & "Police Academy 5" (why would she do Playboy, her career seemed to be fine)...could've been involved in placing bets on behalf of her husband, the Great One...

Ok the thing that really is quite amusing about all this is that the state police released this diagram linking all the involved parties together, or as some would call the "Operation Slap Shot Axis of Evil"...
Now is it just me, or do you think that the illustrators were trying to achieve a certain effect with purple and turquoise uniforms on the players? I must say, I'm listening to it right now, and it is downright comforting...very earthy sound, will remind you of great country folk rock albums of the 70's and it is no accident. Beth says, "I wanted to make an album that sounded like the stuff I grew up listening to...a folk-gospel-soul record with a country tear dripping down it's cheek." She has truly succeeded with this ambitious and mature recording, and this should appeal not just to her longtime fans, but also to a wider audience. Check it out if you can...
www.bethorton.mu
www.bethorton.astralwerks.com

Sarah Harmer-I'm a Mountain...this Canadian singer-songwriter has been making music for almost a decade now and her third album is, like Orton's, very stripped down and bare but powerful nonetheless. Go out and get one her first two if you want a good taste of her more "upbeat and rocking" side, but then definitely take the time to get into this. A little more country bluegrass flavor, but very warm, wonderful spare accompaniment and one of the most soothing voices out there...be like me and when you have a good rainy day to just stay in & relax (like I did last Saturday hungover) sit down with a nice big cup of coffee, something to read and either one (or both) of these discs and just take it all in, you won't be sorry...and hey, you might just get as much of a crush on Sarah as I do...www.sarahharmer.com

I must also let you in about a somewhat new discovery that I became somewhat obsessed with the past few weeks...about 5-6 yrs ago, NBC did what most major TV networks do when they have a fresh new show that :
a) critics raved about
b) had a modest following (that has turned into cult status today)
c)a nice looking young up & coming cast
d) but an absolutely mortal sin of a timeslot (Friday 8pm if I remember correct)

They cancelled it after one season.
Freaks and Geeks, from the brilliant comedic minds of Judd Apatow (directed the 40-year-old Virgin), Paul Feig and Mike White (The Good Girl, Chuck and Buck) was a nearly perfect slice of life hour long comedy (yeah if you weren't Ally McBeal or on the WB, you didn't have a chance back then) centering on the title outsiders, following their day to day exploits in freshman and sophomore year of high school in suburbia circa 1980-81. Going chronologically through the year and centering on the kids "left of the dial", the show captured so much of the angst, emotion, embarassment, exhilaration and downright hilarity that went with trying to "fit in" and find your place in high school.
With future stars like James Franco (Spiderman, Annapolis), Linda Cardellini (Brokeback Mountain and as Velma in the Scooby Doo movies), Jason Segel (CBS's How I Met Your Mother) and Seth Rogen (The 40-year old Virgin), this show was ahead of it's time while reaching so far back in time. The soundtrack also is so perfectly dead on with music of the time that we love or would like to forget about (from the Joan Jett sung theme to Styx to XTC to Bob Seger to yes, "Funkytown") If the OC or One Tree Hill were as well-written and hilarious as this, I would maybe tune in...and if John Hughes was still making great teen movies instead of kid's crap, I think he would be envious of this show...hell, as painful as high school was for many of us, this may just make you want to make you want to go back through the yearbook and remember...find it on DVD if you can, or be like me and check it out from your local library (I'm not kidding)...www.freaksandgeeks.com

Ok, my time is up here but next time I promise some more good sounds and sights (Belle & Sebastian, the Grammys) but maybe also some political commentary (I doubt it), or some deep thoughts and religious meditation (ok, I'm f***ing with you now)...but seriously, enjoy it and hope to talk again soon.

Frank & Frank

Another rainy Saturday in DE...

Ahh...more rain, just what we need...awoke nice and early to take the dogs out for a stroll through the neighborhood and got utterly drenched. It's been such a Seattle like winter, I'm starting to believe all this hubub about global warming...I work outside for a living, so it has been somewhat pleasurable having more 50 plus degree days than I can remember in one winter, but it would be nice to at least get one good snowstorm...I hate to say it, but I kind of miss late night drunken sledding in Rockford park after last call at Scratch's...

Some good sounds to catch this week:

Rosanne Cash-Black Cadillac...she should no longer just be referred to as Johnny's daughter b/c she not only has been making consistently wonderful music for over 25 yrs., but this is by far her best, a poignant collection of songs written during the grieving of the death of her parents and stepmother June...www.rosannecash.com...

John Mayer Trio-Try...Ok, I know how probably many of you feel about this guy...Your body is a Wonderland over and over again, but trust me, give him another chance, especially w/this new disc. It's a live recording of him and his blues trio doing a mix of great covers (Hendrix and ray Charles included) and some new stuff that definitely shows his influences and great chops on the guitar...take a listen to it if you can, you won't be disappointed...www.johnmayer.com...

Cat Power-The Greatest...the enigmatic Chan Marshall returns in wonderful form showing off her somewhat happier side...a little horns, some Memphis soul, some amazing songs...definitely good stuff, and one of the best album covers of the year.... www.catpowerthegreatest.com...

Also wearing out an early Bruce Springsteen bootleg...The Saint, the incident & the E Street Shuffle...a show that was recorded 2/2/75 at the legendary Main Point in Bryn Mawr, PA (the cover shot of Bruce on his Tracks box set was taken on a couch there), this 2 cd set is a great collection of Bruce right before Born to Run was released...awesome soundboard quality, great song selection (check out Thunder Road in it's early forms w/ different lyrics) and the fact that Bruce went from playing this little coffeehouse on the Main Line to the Spectrum in about a year's time is really interesting...find it at www.springsteenliveinconcert.com.

Some good DVD's this week..."Waiting", you know the little movie that will make you laugh out loud but never want to go to Bennigan's ever again? Preview it at www.waitingthefilm.com
Or maybe "The Squid and the Whale"...Jeff Daniels and Laura Linney and William Baldwin (what the?) in a perfect little slice of 80's era comedy that gets all the details right, even the silly Burger King glasses we all had back in '85...it makes us want to go back to when our own parents got divorced...http://www.squidandthewhalemovie.com
Ok, it's time to wrap it up...oh before I forget, who's going to be watching the Super Bowl? I will, but without Janet Jackson or Justin or Paul Mccartney or TO or Tom Brady or...it's gonna be a little boring...I think they need to put SNL's "Lazy Sunday" on there if the game is a blowout...oh well, enjoy and drink responsibly (I don't why I just said that)...
Coming next time, a full review of new Beth Orton and the Freaks and Geeks series DVD set...enjoy the rest of your wet weekend and talk to you soon.
